We present a theoretical framework for understanding the relationship between anchoring bias, hypothetical bias, and cheap talk in constructed markets. In our theory, interviewers provide agents with signals such as cheap talk and bid values while eliciting the value for nonmarket goods. In response to these signals, agents revise their prior distributions over the value of the good. Previous empirical studies have failed to account for the interaction between cheap talk and anchoring during this updating process, leading researchers to incorrectly assess the effects of cheap talk in reducing hypothetical bias. In particular, we predict that cheap talk will appear to be more effective for relatively large bids. We test our theory in an experimental... |

In the eusocial worker bees, portions of the epithelium of the abdominal epidermis may become hypertrophied and glandular, and produce the wax used to build the brood alveoli. In meliponine bees, the presence of similar epithelium was already observed in the queens, but its function is still unknown. Would this epithelium have homologous function in the workers? May the queens display other functions, besides reproduction, related to those considered exclusive of workers? In order to contribute to solve these questions, a histological and ultrastructural study of the tegumentary epithelial glands of the third tergite was carried out in virgins and physogastric queens of Scaptotrigona postica Latreille. The glandular tegumentary epithelium was easily... |

The variations of zooplankton structure and abundance were studied at short time intervals in the northern part of the West Naubaria Canal, near the sea side, based on weekly sampling from May 2002 to May 2003 .The community represented high species richness (120 species), and relatively low population density ( annual average 31340 organisms/m.3). Freshwater forms were the major representatives (68 species) of the community, including the sea side station. However, several marine species were reported inside the canal at a long distance from the sea. The community structure showed wide weekly variations (4-29 species), while between stations the differences were small. Relative to salinity in the canal, diversity index sustained the highest value (annual... |

Beside financial problems, farmers of developing countries commonly suffer poor technical extension and lack of perfect marketing information. Performance of supporting governmental institutions is weakened by bureaucracy and impotent organizational practices on one hand, and on the other, low profit expectations hinder participation of the private sector. In view of these respects, the study suggests a certain channel and basis of performance to provide farmers with required both production and marketing technical support and information, principally supervised by a governmental single corps, the ministry of agriculture or a relevant institution, which would be able to retrieve a substantial proportion of expenses through sharing with farmers a percent of... |

Tendency toward application of advanced technology in farming practices has been accelerated in Egypt since the mid Seventies of the last century. Both domestic technology generation and foreign technology transfer were encouraged. High-quality cultivars, mechanized farming operations, and modern agricultural systems, such as protected agriculture and organic farming were strongly introduced. As such, this study tended to assess the Egyptian experience in farming modernization, areas of success, points of weakness and drawbacks, determinants and measures of improvement. Based on field data, the study revealed a generally low percent of modern techniques adoption, especially for costly innovations or integrated technological packages, dropping to nearly 2%... |

New technology introduction in this semiarid region of the Sahel is hypothesized to be made more difficult by three price problems in the region. First, staple prices collapse annually at harvest. Secondly, there is a between year price collapse in good and very good years due to the inelastic demand for the principal staple, millet, and the large changes in supply from weather and other stochastic factors. Thirdly, government and NGOs intervene in adverse rainfall years to drive down the price increases. Marketing strategies were proposed for the first two price problems and a public policy change for the third. To analyze this question at the firm level a farm programming model was constructed. Based upon surveying in four countries, including Niger,... |

This study focuses on public investments and policy reforms for leveraging growth spillovers at the African regional level. A conceptual framework that is built on the endogenous growth theory and the new economic geography is presented first to gain a better understanding of the underlying theory and empirical evidence on regional integration and growth spillovers. In order to demonstrate the potential benefits from greater cross-border technology spillovers in Africa, as well as from trade liberalization and investment in infrastructure, results from ex-ante simulations using partial and general equilibrium models are then presented and discussed. Results indicate that sizeable regional spillover benefits can be obtained by permitting greater crossborder... |

Whereas water is an important input in rice production, China faces severe problems with increasing demand for water and limited water resources. In conventional paddy production, one of the most important irrigated crops, a significant amount of irrigation water is lost due to percolation and evaporation. Therefore, it exist a vivid research in water saving rice technologies. This paper analyzes the adoption of one of these water-saving rice production technologies, the so-called Ground Cover Rice Production System (GCRPS), in the Hubei province. Based on farm survey data several factors which affect the adoption decision could be identified. The adoption decision is treated as a binary choice problem and therefore a probit model is used for the... |

The present work was carried out on ten mature Tilapia (Tilapia spilurus) and ten mature Bream fish (Mylio cuvieri) and the specimens were processed for histological studies. The oesophagus of Bream fish is characterized by the presence of numerous mucous cells which react positively to P.A.S. and alcian blue. While oesophagus of Tilapia is completely filled with mucous cells that react positively to P.A.S. only. The stomach of Bream consists of one part while that of Tilapia consists of two parts (cardiac and pyloric). The mucosa of stomach of both types of fish reacted positively to P.A.S. the pyloric caeci of Bream fish showed numerous mucous cells that react positively to Alsain blue. The small intestine of bream has thicker tunica muscularis than that... |
